DoCoMo to Build Mobile Phone Towers Powered by Renewable Energy

DoCoMo announced that the company plans t to start using renewable energy, such as bio-fuel cells, wind power, or solar power, to provide electricity for its mobile phone tower network, according to a July 20, 2011 report by Japan Today. It is reported that DoCoMo currently has approximately 9,000 mobile phone relay stations, and the company projects to establish around 10 renewable energy facilities in fiscal year 2012 to supplement traditional power supply. In addition to environmental protection reason, DoCoMo's move is expected to protect its system from blackouts, according to the same source.
